Description

This book describes the basics of language and linguistics and some related matters in a hundred questions such as: What is Grammar? What is Language? What is Syntax? What is meaning? What is a Word? What is a Phoneme? What is wrong with ELT, Sociolinguistics or Applied linguistics? What is Science? The answers to these questions are based, on the one hand, on the teaching of my respected teachers in Asia, Europe and America during the last three decades, and on the other, on the works of the great masters of linguistics. This book is obviously not for linguists. The intended readership would be constituted of those who wish to have a very basic or primary idea about language and linguistics.About Author: Shishir Bhattacharja (born in Chittagong in1963) Ph.D. (2007, University of Montreal) and JSPS postdoctoral fellow (2008-10, NINJAL, Tokyo) was trained in Linguistics at the University of Sorbonne, Paris in the eighties and nineties. He has published extensively on the grammar of Bengali. In two of his books Sanjani Byakaran (1998), Antaranga Byakoron (2013) he analyses different problems of language and linguistics. His Bangla Byakorner Ruprekha (2016) is an exhaustive description of the grammar of Bengali. In Bangla Bhasha: Prokrito Shomoshsha and Peshadari Shomadan (2016) he points out the true problems of Bengali and prescribe adequate solutions. Shishir usually writes in Bengali. However, he has one book in English Word Formation in Bengali (2007) and one in French Bhagwan et son monde orange (1991) to his credit. He has been teaching French at the Institute of Modern Languages, University of Dhaka since 1989 where he is now a full professor
